If you are thinking of sprucing up your kitchen do not want a complete overhaul

If you are thinking of sprucing up your kitchen do not want a complete overhaul, you can consider changing your backsplash. But then, one of the most difficult decisions you make when you design your kitchen is choosing your kitchen backsplash.

The kitchen backsplash is the material finish that transitions from your countertop, along the wall and up to the upper cabinets that not only provides an aesthetic backdrop for your kitchen, it also keeps your kitchen easy to clean and maintain.

There are a lot of types of tile to choose from like stone, metal, glass or clay and there are also different patterns, colors and make to choose from, giving you a wide variety of choices. You have to keep in mind that deciding on a backsplash is not only about the tile that you want, there are actually several aspects to consider.

Here are some of those things to consider on choosing your kitchen backsplash.

Special Feature – You can make your backsplash a special feature in your kitchen. You want your backsplash to be a focal point, so you have to balance this with the other features in your kitchen (upper cabinets, shelves, windows etc). It is a great idea for your “special feature” to be on a separate area in your kitchen and not on your whole kitchen. This could be a pantry or a bar.

Simple Feature – If you are considering a contemporary minimalist kitchen, a stone slab backsplash that covers one end of your backsplash to the other could work. Often times, it is the same stone used on the countertop, giving the kitchen a seamless look. No grout lines or intricate patterns. This works perfectly on a kitchen with simple cabinetry and where details are minimal.

Colorful Feature – If you want a bold color for your backsplash, you’d want to make sure that this is a color that you really want and not just a seasonal fancy because bold colors could be a very prominent part of your kitchen. A bold backsplash works well with open floating shelves. You have to also consider the other elements in your kitchen so that the look of your whole kitchen works together.

But if you don’t want your backsplash to give the color statement to your kitchen, you can use other aspects of your kitchen that are easily replaceable to give that color to your kitchen, like lighting, furniture and accessories.

Pattern – Another thing to consider is the pattern of your backsplash. You can choose from mosaic tiles, or small individual tiles in brick patter or herringbone. This look bridges the gap of your countertop and upper cabinets and it does not work as focal points, but still enhances the overall look as it blends into the kitchen.

Your backsplash is an essential part of your kitchen’s composition and ultimately all aspects of your kitchen should be able to work together, including your backsplash.
